Power Basketball Camp est. 1991

About

Power Camp uses basketball as its draw to encourage children to pursue a post-secondary education and to achieve their life goals.

Regularly, kids go through a rigorous exercise program that not only teaches the fundamentals of basketball but also builds their character, although basketball is the main attraction of the program the goal is to expose the kids to opportunities for a post-secondary both in Canada and the US.

Through Power Camp the kids have extraordinary experiences. Donovan Dill was one of the first Raptor ambassadors in 1995, executing Raptor basketball clinics, player appearances and celebrity engagements within the GTA and across Ontario, from Norwich to Cornwall. Participants have interacted with NBA players through tournaments, participated in volunteers programs, and have even worked as extras in movies. Guest speakers also talk to the kids about their lives and show them that they can achieve their goals no matter who they are or where they come from.

Donovan has touched the lives of over five thousand youth. He remembers life stories of all the kids and where most of them are right now. He looks at PowerCamp as fun and believes that if PowerCamp can impact only one youth, it is worth it.

Testimonials

Once again we would like to thank you and your volunteers for your support and participation in the 1998 Canadian Streetball 3 on 3 Basketball Program, sponsored by Golden Grahms and Golden Grahams Treats. It is always a pleasure to work with the members of the community in bringing this exciting youth program to the people of the Greater Toronto Area. Having just completed our Ninth Annual Event in Toronto, we are proud to remain the only Canadian national 3 on 3 program and to have once again delivered a successful event to local basketball enthusiats. The majority of players continue to be youth aged 10-24 years and it is encouraging to see so many families joining us throughout the weekend. We have just finished our 8 city Streetball National Tour, which wrapped up with the National Championships at the Docks in Toronto on Labour Day Weekend. Thank you again for your continued support and cooperation. It is always a pleasure working with you Donovan, and I thank you and the rest of your group for a job well done. All the best, and I look forward to making arrangements for our next tournament in the GTA.

This week I learned a few good things and also Tips. I have learned after I take a shot to hustle and get the rebound. Another thing I learned; you can never learn too much in anything you do. I also learned that when your are on a break never stop, because it gives the defender a chance to get back on defense. Last but not least, never give up no matter what it takes.

I step on the court like I step into a classroom. I'm not the best student on the team. I need to study more Now that I have a tutor my game is improving.

I am writing to congratulate, as well as to thank, Powercamp for providing such an incredible learning experience to so many young athletes. I attended Powercamp for two weeks in the summer of 1995. At the time I was living in Barrie, Ontario but the distance was more than compensated by everything I learned and the friends that I made. Before attending the camp I was a dedicated player with relatively good fitness but was not starting for my high school team. I went to Powercamp in hopes of realizing the goals I had set for myself. Although I knew it would be hard, my goals were to earn a spot on the starting line up for my team and to play in the Simcoe County all-star game. In the two weeks of camp I made countless friendships with others who were attending camp as well as the coaches. I have stayed in contact with two of the coaches to this day, which seems typical of the Powercamp focus towards constant improvement. I was amazed at how quickly my ability and athleticism were improving. Not only had my dribbling, defending, and shooting fundamentals improved but also my deeper understanding for the game had already developed considerably. I may have been too young to realize it at the time, but I strongly believe that the lessons learned at Powercamp translated into several other aspects of my life. The benefits of hard work, determination and keeping myself motivated were common subjects communicated by our coaches and guest speakers that frequently visited us. We learned about performing well under pressure, handling intense competition and how to stay mentally and physically prepared for challenge. Furthermore, we learned the power of pride and respect. As I saw myself improving in all of these aspects, my self esteem was lifted and only furthered my motivation to excel. I volunteered to help with the camp on various events throughout that summer and attended several clinics held over the following two years. I am very proud to say that I earned a starting position on my highschool team, I was voted captain, and lead the team in point, assists, and steals. I was later awarded the team's Most Valuable Player and was invited to play in the all star game. Although I never played basketball at a University level, I can honestly say that I may not have completed my University education without the life lessons that I learned through Powercamp over the years. My athleticism, education and career have all benefited a great deal from what started as a couple weeks at summer camp. Thank you Powercamp. I appreciate everything I have learned, the friendships I have developed, and the memories I have kept. All the best in the future.

Dear Donovan, I know that it seems like a lifetime ago, but I haven't forgotten about your incredible contribution this year's Kids First! Telethon. The basketball shooting at this year's first Telethon 'Party' was a big hit. You created a fun, exciting atmosphere with your enthusiasm and energy, which helped to make this year's Party the success that it was (I don't think that I ever saw you without a smile on you face!). I have included a sweatshirt for you as our way of saying thank you for your generous contribution. So thank you again, for giving your time and energy to help make this year's Telethon and 'Party' the over $6million success that it was. We couldn't have made the impossible possible without you.

Donovan Dill and the Power Camp played had an important role in my early basketball and collegiate career. Power Camp helped me better myself as a basketball player that in turn aided my education by helping me obtain a basketball scholarship. Power Camp gave me the exposure and experience I needed to advance not only as athlete but a student as well. Donovan not only prepared me for the rigors of basketball through intense training, but also help me evolve as an individual by teaching me the lessons of life. I would recommend the Powercamp to any and all young men or women looking to better themselves in the athletic as well as academic arena.
